How do we return at-risk students to school safely? In my 27 years as a school nurse, I have seen a large increase in the number of students who are at risk for suicidal ideation, self-injury, or injury to someone else. As employees of an educational institution, it is our responsibility to provide a free appropriate public education (FAPE) to all students (Schwab & Gelfman, 2001; Selekman & Gamel- McCormick, 2006). The question is how we safely provide FAPE to these at-risk students.
