Abstract

In this paper the author presents an analysis of factors relating to the increase in traffic accidents, traffic fatalities, and diminished traffic safety in Indonesian cities like Jakarta specifically as a function of that country’s rapid increase in motorization. The author attributes the decrease in safety to the failure to properly implement a control strategy for vehicle growth in the country, particularly in the case of motorcycles. For instance, while the vehicle ownership rate has steadily increased at approximately 10 percent per year, the infrastructure growth rate in the country remains at only one percent. Additionally, it has been found that human errors are the leading cause of such accidents. The author proposes that the best method of safety improvement for the country is to improve human behavior and driving characteristics. Means of collecting traffic data given when is known about regional traffic patterns are also described.
