Abstract

This paper describes the land transportation management policies of Singapore in terms of their utility for controlling car use and car ownership. By analyzing the quantitative effect these policies have on travel characteristics for car owners, authors hope to provide a more detailed picture of how the management alters travel patterns for everyday drivers. Information was collected from vehicle-based travel diaries deployed in vehicles where details of trips made within a 4 week period were recorded at intervals in 1990 and 2005. In the first survey, 11,638 sets of data from 115 vehicles were collected and, in 2005, 11,336 sets of data were collected from 108 vehicles. The set of information collected from the trip diary recorder included trip purpose, travel duration, travel distance, passenger occupancy level, time that travel was made, and road class.
