Abstract

A liberal understanding of social life has heavily influenced the manner in which bullying behaviour has been studied. Moreover, in countries with colonial histories, residues of that colonialism colour those understandings. This paper reinterprets bullying behaviour as "intimidatory practices" that carry racialized, gendered, and economic vectors. It addresses the negative effect that liberal and colonial discourses have on the construction of knowledge about bullying, demonstrating the manner in which those interpretations contribute to the reproduction of social divisions. Special reference is made to those divisions associated with ethnic difference.
