Abstract

In order to demonstrate a new methodology for time-series studies, eighteen social variables for the United Staates from 1933 to 1985 were factor-analyzed to reveal five independent clusters of variables. Suicide rates were predicted by military involvement and business failures, whereas homicide rates were predicted by the time and the threat experienced by Americans.
