Abstract

These comments on the effective use of deterrence approaches to reduce alcohol-impaired driving center on the theme that, where feasible, we should make better use of the programs and policies we already have at our disposal. The two key points are that (1) there may be cost-effective, community-based ways to enhance the impact of the tools we already have in our possession (grass-roots initiatives that can effectively increase awareness at the community level) and (2) while police attitudes are important, police morale is just as important for law enforcement.
