Abstract

This paper describes an investigation into driver behaviour when driving on a highway with an adaptive cruise control (ACC) system. Nine subjects drove on the highway without ACC for ten days and with ACC for about twenty days. Driving speed, operation of the gas and brake pedals and the distance to the lead vehicle were measured. This study focuses on driver overtaking behaviour after adaptation to driving with ACC. The results show that when using ACC, the driving speed of overall trips decreases and the distance to the forward vehicle before overtaking increases, indicating a positive effect on traffic safety. The frequency and time rate of overtaking with ACC decrease in comparison to when ACC is not used, and the overtaking behaviour with ACC can be divided into two groups: one in which drivers rely on ACC while overtaking and the other in which drivers override the ACC system before passing the lead vehicle.
