Abstract

The relationship between energy loss and delta-V in vehicle collision is formulated from a two-dimensional car-to-car impact model. In order to understand the energy loss, impulse and delta-V at collision, sixteen car-to-car side impact tests were conducted and analyzed according to this formula, in which the generalized impulse ratio (GIR)was used as an index indicating the collision type. The energy loss and impulse measured from the tests are presented with GIR. A new method of estimating the delta-V from energy loss alone is also introduced and validated by comparison with the actual delta-V at the tests.
