Abstract

To reduce traffic accident casualties, it is necessary to investigate the causes that induce the accidents. An effective scientific approach to this problem is to detect and study not only accidents but also near-miss incidents by using a drive recorder. Drive recorders are capable not only of acting as a witness when an accident occurs, but also of gathering valuable information to be utilized in the design and development of active safety and accident prevention systems. This article describes the background of strategies for reducing traffic accident casualties, the synthesis of scientific approaches, and the recent activities conducted by the Society of Automotive Engineers of Japan.
