Abstract

Shaila Patel would like to see an end to bullying. 'As a dentist, I have treated children who were bullied because of funny looking, often badly formed teeth,' says Patel. 'Fortunately, most of the incidents have stopped after treatment. I have also had many reports from adults of bullying incidents in the workplace.' Patel believes that dentists can play a role in helping those who are being bullied. They can listen to young people's feelings and concerns; they can help them explore their options and keep control. They can also encourage children to feel good about themselves. To raise awareness of this issue, and to support the NSPCC anti-bullying campaign, Patel has organised a Christmas charity auction and party.
