Abstract

This article describes the development of a problem-based learning case focused on youth violence prevention. Development of the case involved: a review of the literature on youth violence prevention and youth violence prevention education, drafting of a fictitious case that integrated prominent themes in the literature, review of the case by a multidisciplinary curriculum planning group whose intent was to oversee youth violence prevention training throughout medical training, and integration of the case in the psychiatry clerkship experienced by all students at the University of Hawaii John A. Burns School of Medicine. The text of the case, along with references, tutor's notes, intended learning objectives, and evaluation measures, are included in this article. Students and faculty thus far have given positive feedback on the case. We recommend that other programs consider problem-based learning as one of several methods to teach youth violence prevention and that educational outcomes be studied further.
