Abstract

In order to ascertain the pattern of injuries received in road traffic accidents, a survey was conducted in the Accident and Emergency Units of 6 government hospitals from 18th August 1977 to 31st December 1977. During this 5-month period a total of 415 drivers, 488 passengers of which 268 were front-seating passengers and 2665 motorcyclists and pillion riders were seen and treated at these departments. The injury pattern as reported for drivers and passengers was radically different from that for motorcyclists. The motorcyclist was 6 times more likely to be injured in road traffic accidents than the occupant of a car in terms of the number of vehicles registered. Though the compulsory wearing of crash helmets had reduced the vulnerability of motorcyclists to head injury compared to drivers and front-seating passengers, nevertheless the number of motorcyclists reported with open wounds to the head was still substantial. This could be due to improper wearing of helmets or different protective effects of different designs of helmets. It was also noted that the vulnerable age group was 20-29 years which made up 52.6% of injured drivers and 44.9% of injured drivers and passengers.
