Abstract

The main aim of the present paper is to examine the relationship between medication and driving ability from the point of view of health staff treating patients who drive. Certain groups of drugs, more especially those affecting the central nervous system, may have a negative effect on driving performance. In addition, factors are considered which may condition the relationship: the state of health of the driver patient and driving habits, and patterns concerning the taking of medication, in which the susceptibility of the patient to certain drugs, the dangers of self-medication and the consuming of alcohol whilst undergoing treatment, are discussed. Finally, recommendations are made to health staff with regard to this type of case.
