Abstract

Objective: The purposes of the pilot study are to experience the trial and error before the main study, to prepare for the main case-control study, to quantify the relative and attributable risks, and to have a concrete idea about motor vehicle crashes and subsequent injuries or death.

Methods: Cheonan city was selected for the survey place. Cheonan city is a medium- sized city in Korea from a populous point of view and has a high rate of accidents. The research team coordination is structured with different institutions. The 'case-control study' methodology is adopted.

Results: Six elements for positive risk factors are drunk driver, fatigue, accident experience, aged man, old car, and seat belt wearing low rate. Six elements for negative risk factors are good road condition, high level education, attending a sufficient lecture about driving course, all risk insurance, married, and respect regulation. But several problems are observed through this pilot survey.

Conclusions: This pilot survey was useful. The anticipation for reduction of injuries in long term as product of the main study succeeding pilot study will be possible.
