Abstract

Following up a previously published investigation of military off-road Jeep and Land-Rover vehicles, all recorded accidents from 1985 to 1988 inclusive involving the Mercedes-Benz 240GD were reviewed. In all, 395 accidents were recorded. Twenty of these accidents involved 31 casualties. Roll-over accidents figured prominently, but seat belts were shown to be of value in both roll-over and non-roll-over accidents. The vehicle appears to be an improvement safety-wise over its predecessors, especially the Jeeps.
