Abstract

From 1980 to 1989 forty-three victims of fatal bicycle accidents were submitted to the Dusseldorf University Institute of Forensic Medicine for autopsy. These were composed of 27 males and 16 females ages 4 through 84 years. The median age was 45 years, and the most striking fact was the high proportion of children and adolescents (26 percent). In 11 cases the bicyclists were struck by a motor vehicle when turning into a new road. In 10 cases they were struck when crossing a road, and in 3 cases a collision with another bicycle occurred.
