Abstract

Chaotic traffic causes 7,200 deaths a year, more than 100,000 injuries, thousands of handicapped people and substantial material losses. There is death rate five to six times higher than that of developed countries when compared to the number of vehicles circulating in Argentina (6,000,000 approx). Main causes for this situation are: lack of awareness by the public who think accidents are caused by bad luck or are something that 'always happens to others'. Traffic safety rules are frequently violated, especially those regarding speed and the use of seat belts. Public officials do not show any concern for this situation, putting off the passing of laws on traffic safety or not enforcing them properly when they are passed; not punishing traffic violations nor undertaking any significant advertising or public education campaign. This is the sad reality Luchemos por la Vida trying to change.
