Abstract

Figures are provided to illustrate the benefits of seat belt wearing in terms of reduced fatalities and severity of injuries. The effect of legislation on the wearing of seat belts is considered. The injuries suffered by car occupants wearing seat belts including those caused by the belt itself are discussed. An examination of exemptions to seat belt wearing reveals very few valid exemptions. Seat belts are considered particularlry important for pregnant women. Improvements to occupant protection are discussed including a) improvements to the seat belt, b) the use of air bags, c) improved internal padding, d) knee bolsters, e) steering wheel protection, f) side impact protection and g) the use of head gear.
