Abstract

The present paper puts forward several reasons why it may now be timely to identify the road-data needs of those responsible for forming and evaluating policy in a number of different fields, to describe the data core of common usefulness, and to promote co-sponsorship of increasingly expensive data collection. Information on road use is principally discussed in relation to road safety research, environmental quality control and energy conservation. It is noted that such information is also useful for those concerned with road maintenance and development. The single, double or triple usefulness of specific data items is presented in tabular form.
