Abstract

The different cases of applying relativized quantities to accident research are discussed: a systematic approach to the use of exposure quantities is developed. Special attention is paid to the question of which kind of quantities are suitable to be used in order to form risk characteristics and also to the problem, under which conditions this reference quantity is to be regarded as a random variable rather than a fixed value. For the various cases resulting from this approach, statistical methods (in part new) are discussed and examples given.
