Abstract

This study on traffic accidents registered in Qatar during the years 1976, 1977 and 1978 shows the size, evolution and epidemiological characteristics of the problem. Descriptive and quantitative information is given about motor transport in the country with the purpose of finding the reasons for the high incidence of traffic accidents. In fact, the average of the three years studied shows that some 185 deaths were due to this cause (over 90% of all traumatic deaths registered) in a country which in 1978 had approximately 220,000 inhabitants, 80,000 motor vehicles and 1200km of paved roads. It is concluded that there were definite cultural, ethical and behavioural attitudes, and also psychological problems in this multiracial community which predisposed to the high incidence of road traffic accidents.
