Abstract

The gun control laws of the 48 continental states of the U.S.A. in 1968 were scaled for their strictness. The rates of accidental deaths from various causes in 1960 and 1970 (and the change in these rates between the two periods) were examined to see whether states with the strictest gun control laws had significantly lower accidental death rates from firearms. Although states with the strictest gun control laws had lower accidental death rates from firearms and a lesser increase from 1960 to 1970. the data did not completely support the hypotheses, since such states also had lower rates of accidental deaths from poisons and drowning.
