Abstract

In a visual survey of 4,602 child passengers traveling in 3,149 automobiles only 123 children--less than 3%--were observed in front seat positions in which they would be contacted by an air bag early in its deployment. Several recent technological developments suggesting that even these few out-of-position children can be protected by air bags are discussed. The importance of providing "passive" (automatic) protection for children traveling in automobiles is emphasized.
