Abstract

As driver distraction is the traffic safety topic most in the news today, with mobile phone, portable music players, and in-vehicle navigation devices the focus of much attention, this article explores how advances in human-machine interfaces (HMIs) can best ensure drivers remain connected yet safe on the modern roadways. The focus is on HMIs such as voice-activated systems that allow drivers to interact with their various devices while keeping hands on the steering wheel and eyes on the road.
