Abstract

Every year, more than 7,000 pedestrians are killed and around 150,000 are injured on the roads of the European Union, and 4,000 pedestrians are killed and 70,000 are injured on U.S. roads. As the number of vehicles in the world continues to increase--especially in developing nations--the number of accidents involving pedestrians is likely to worsen. This article focuses on the development of various in-vehicle pedestrian detection and warning systems aimed at reducing vehicle-pedestrian collisions.
