Abstract

The author, a leading dynamicist who raced automobiles in the 1970s, presents some personal views on road safety. He explores the possibility of advanced driver assistance systems, such as electric power steering, traction control, and anti-lock braking systems, leading to riskier driver behavior on the road. He believes that highway safety depends more on driver behavior, including speeding and tailgating (close following), than on technology. An insert provides the author's answers to some commonly asked questions.
