Abstract

During October 1992 to September 1995, 19,999 traffic accident patients, about 54.6 percent of total accident patients, were treated in Prapokklao Hospital. It was the most common cause of accident in Prapokklao Hospital and the first cause of in-patients. The proportion of traffic accident in-patients to all traffic accident out-patients were 43.2, 46.2 and 43.0 percent, respectively. The average rate of rise of traffic accident was 2.5 percent per year. Male to female ratio was 4:1. The age below 20 years old had maximum number of patient, 39.9 percent. The majority of patients, 87.7 percent, were below 40 years old. The mortality rate is 57.5 per one thousand patients. Traffic accident was the first to second cause of death of in-patients. Motorcycle accidents were the most common cause of accident about 83.0 percent. 35.9 percent of patients were impaired by alcohol.
