Abstract

This paper provides an analysis of the safety performance of the Greek Road Traffic System by following a three-step method. It focuses on examining fatal accidents during a period of 28 years (1963-1990), and discovering the correlations between the occurrence of fatal accidents and the special characteristics of the Greek Road Traffic System. The analysis indicates the existence of three major upward trends during the periods 1963-1980, 1980-1985, and 1986-1990 respectively, as well as the occurrence of a level shift in 1986. A combination of time-series techniques with qualitative information is used for modelling the annual and monthly data, and a short-term extrapolation is performed.
