Abstract

With the active cooperation of the national sports governance organizations for high school and college athletics, a retrospective survey of their national memberships was conducted to learn the nature and frequency of sports-related spinal cord injuries occurring in school-sponsored activities for the three years of 1973 through 1975. The annual occurrence of permanent spinal cord injuries in school-sponsored sports programs nationally was found to be infrequent. Nevertheless, where patterns can be discerned and thereby enable preventive action, persistence, not frequency, is the criterion. Continuous and systematic surveillance of these occurrences is needed.
