Abstract

Most western countries have legislation that restricts driving for people who suffer cardiovascular diseases (CVD). However, few controlled studies have been conducted to document the relationship between CVD and an excess risk of traffic accident. This paper reports on a critical review of the literature that groups published studies according to the extent of control over confounding variables. None of the well controlled studies were able to demonstrate a consistant increase of risk for drivers who suffer CVD. Therefore, there is a lack of empirical evidence to back up any prescription that would prevent those drivers from driving once the acute stage is over.
