Abstract

We advance the notion that a significant number of automobile accidents may be attributable to the driver diverting attention from the driving task during a search of the environment. These searches encompass such diverse activities as searching for a parking place in a familiar neighborhood and looking for a particular address in an unfamiliar locale. During segments of his journey, the driver is relatively inattentive to the driving task and should therefore be more liable to accident involvement.
