Abstract

Formal ship safety assessment is a new approach that has attracted great attention in the marine industry over the last several years. In this paper, following a brief review of the current status of maritime safety assessment, a formal ship safety assessment framework is presented. The five steps in formal ship safety assessment are then briefly discussed. This is followed by the study of risk criteria in ship safety assessment and the discussion of its possible application in ship design and operation. The recommendations on further work required are finally given.
