Abstract

The majority of agricultural tractor overturning accidents on slopes are of two types. The first, known as a stability loss accident, is when the tractor overturns directly, and the second, known as a control loss accident, is when the tractor runs away out of control before overturning. This paper discusses both types of accident. A number of different stability and control loss accidents are described using case studies drawn from actual accident investigations and covering as wide a range as possible. The circumstances of each accident are given briefly and the reasons for stability or control loss are explained using polar diagrams. Each case study is accompanied by some ideas on accident prevention. These ideas are discussed and it is suggested that the number of accidents could be reduced after the introduction of training for driving on slopes as well as the application of new measurement techniques.
