Abstract

Shinjuku Family Town was created 10 years ago and is held as a fine example of area restriction and traffic calming. Having established notable results, this practice spread all over Japan and greatly contributed to the instructing safe and clean communities. However, the traffic environment caused problems mainly on roads around and near the restricted areas. Therefore, we consider that it is time to take a new look at the effects of these measures have on safety and quality of life of those within the communities and balance that with the effects these measures have on the traffic network.
