Abstract

Tokyu Dwell Okegawa Village adopted the idea of "Woonerf" into the design of passages at housing developments to improve the living environment and realized the shared surface spaces for man and vehicle. Basic Woonerf concepts include: joint utilization of space by man and vehicle while freeing man from the danger of vehicle accident; use of road space not simply for traffic flow but also as living space; planned allocation of parking spaces for efficient utilization of land; and creation of a better landscape through vigorous planting and gardening efforts. This paper describes the process of this new environment and outlines the planning and technical problems of construction.
