Abstract

The focus of the symposium was on mobility as this is the most fundamental starting point in the traffic and transportation fields. It was realized that the various problems of present-day society in this transportation area cannot be fully and truly solved by superficial and shallow solutions barely addressed to the cosmetic phenomena. Brother what was needed were meaningful and penetrating scholarly discussions focusing on this concept of mobility from a broad perspective including cultural and historic considerations. There were several issues that were discussed in depth: Why mobility? (a discussion of mobility from economic, psychological, and cultural perspectives); and Mobility and human behavior (planned communities, risk-taking, violating regulations, bosozoku, public transportation, handicapped accessibility, etc.).
