Abstract

Australia has set a target to reduce the annual road fatality rate per 100,000 population by 40% between 1999 and 2010. The National Road Safety Strategy (NRSS) shows that by 2010 we can save 700 lives every year by improving safety of the roads (332 lives), improving the safety of vehicles (175 lives), improving driver behaviour (158 lives) and adopting smarter safety technology (35 lives).

High visibility markings used not only on safety clothing, but also on roadside, emergency and heavy vehicles, can effectively contribute to achieving these targets and saving the lives of those who are working on our roads. The use of these markings is relatively low cost and is a practical solution to improving the visibility of these vehicles to all road users.
