Abstract

Parallel or tapered offsets has been proposed as a means to improve visibility of opposing through traffic at signalized intersections with opposing left-turn lanes. One low-cost option is to offset opposing left-turning vehicles by widening the width of the lane-line marking between the left-turn lanes and their adjacent through lanes. This paper discusses the safety benefits of this approach. The analysis was performed using an empirical Bayes procedure in order to account for potential bias due to regression-to-the-mean. Twelve treated intersection approaches and 36 non-treated approaches in Lincoln, Nebraska are analyzed. The results show statistically significant safety improvements at the treated intersections. Directions for future research are suggested.
