Abstract

From a cross-national perspective, the practice of combining suicide and homicide rates into (1) lethal violence rates and (2) the proportion of lethal violence expressed as suicide is questioned. Using age standardized data on suicide and homicide rates from 21 developed countries during 1955-1994, results show that, for both males and females, lethal violence rates are so closely correlated to suicide rates that the former offers no unique information. However, the proportion of lethal violence expressed as suicide is a variable worth exploring.
