Abstract

A quick, efficient response to violence in the ED will minimize physical injuries, psychological affect on staff, patients, and visitors as well as potentially harmful publicity. Alert your security personnel when a prisoner is expected in the ED. After a violent incident, shut down the department, clear it of patients, and if possible, place patients behind closed doors. Make a crisis intervention team available to your staff for debriefing. Respond quickly and honestly to all media requests to curb the circulation of harmful rumors.
