Abstract

Since the accident at Three Mile Island, many researchers have been developing methods to help nuclear reactor operators respond to accident situations. A major focus of this work has been the development of expert systems to help reactor operators assess an accident and select an appropriate response. The United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has supported the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory (INEL) to perform research to determine the effects of an expert system on operator performance during simulated accidents. A prototype expert system for reactor operators was developed and two major experiments to assess its effectiveness were performed. This article discusses the development of the expert system, the method and results of the evaluation experiments, and the implications of this research for the development of future expert systems for reactor operators.
