Abstract

This paper commences with a brief introduction to the purpose and operation of lighthouses as part of a transport system. This provides the context for the survey which is described in the remainder of the paper.

The aspects of the lighthouse keepers' work and carrer that are discussed include the physical environment both domestic and at the place of work. The next section includes examinations of the health and accident experiences of lightkeepers and of their reasons for resignation of dismissal from the Service. Lastly, the attitudes of lightkeepers to their job are summarised.
