Abstract

Suicides among vulnerable mental health patients have fallen in England and Wales as a result of mental health trusts implementing best practice recommendations, after the move to providing more care into the community, a study has found.

The study, published in the Lancet (doi:10.1016/S0140-6736(11)61712-1), assessed whether nine recommendations made by the National Confidential Inquiry into Suicide and Homicide by People with Mental Illness more than a decade ago (BMJ 2001;322:633.2) had been implemented by 91 mental health trusts in England and Wales, and whether the recommendations had made any difference.
