Abstract

Interactive effects of feedback and form ratio instruction on novice pilots' performances were examined. Form ratio instruction refers to the delivery of information about how to use the changing shape of the runway to judge position relative to the landing glideslope. Thirty-two flight naive adults (men =15, women = 17) participated in a simulated landing task testing the effect of feedback (present/absent) and form ratio instruction (present/absent) on glide slope error (GSE). A 2 x 2 ANOVA indicated significant main effects for feedback and form ratio instruction. A significant interaction between feedback and form ratio instruction showed form ratio instruction reduced men's but not women's overall GSE. Both hypotheses, (a) the provision of perceptual cues would reduce GSE and (b) women would perform at a lower level than men do, were largely supported.
