Abstract

Heart rate, blood pressure, respiration rate, and eye blink frequency of 18 Hungarian air traffic controllers (ATCOs) were monitored under different levels of traffic (100% of February traffic in 1998,120% and 150%) in a current and in a near future ATC system. Experienced complexity, dynamics, concentration, motivation, and exhaustion were rated at 10-minute-intervals. After each simulation run, the ATCOs recalled flight data information. Stress responses to traffic were lower in the new system compared to the current system. The number of completely correct recalled flight data sets was generally very small but also significantly better in the new system. The study has some methodological limitations but the results indicate that the new system has the potential to compensate stress under high traffic without impairing memory.
