Abstract

The mental health screening program created by the presidentÂ’s New Freedom Commission on Mental Health (NFC) is presented as a way of ferreting out hidden mental illness, beginning with school children, so that appropriate treatment, primarily medication, can then be given. The program may do more harm than good by inappropriately stigmatizing people as mentally ill, starting people on an unnecessary life-long course of medication, and harming our basic freedoms.
