Abstract

Experiments have been carried out with 11 subjects using a double blind crossover design to study the effects of ethanol (0.70 g kg-1) and a sugar preparation (1.66 g kg-1), containing 43% glucose and 36% fructose on blood ethanol profiles and on the rate of ethanol metabolism. The sugar mixture, when given together with ethanol, reduced significantly the level of the blood alcohol curve which was reflected in a lowered maximum (c[max]), a prolonged time for occurrence of the peak level (t[max]), a reduction of the y-intercept (c[O]), the curve reaching the zero level at an earlier time, i.e., a reduction of the x-intercept (min[O]). There was an increase in ethanol turnover and a parallel shift of the whole curve downwards; the slope ((beta)) was not changed. The changes observed in the blood alcohol curve infer a decrease in the rate and extent of alcohol absorption and a more rapid disappearance of alcohol from the body.
