Abstract

The history of breath alcohol analysis and its scientifically based measuring system is characterised by two important issues: the divided Germany with its two different political systems and the unfair conduct by repeatedly not citing preliminary work. This article emphasises the merits of Ernst Scheibe referring to both his unpublished and published works. The paper focuses on the development of technically reliable breath alcohol measurements and the events of the 1950s which led to a neglect of his own scientific work.
