Abstract

The article presents the data and a statistical evaluation of a field study undertaken to compare breath and blood alcohol levels in 132 subjects. The breath sampling was undertaken by the police with a 'Alcytron' infrared apparatus. Both blood and breath samples were taken in the elimination phase. In the analysis parameters as inter alia illness and physique were taken into consideration. These did not statistically influence the results. The regression analysis showed a good correlation between blood and breath alcohol levels. In 47 subjects the levels were equal but 9 showed a deviation of (greater-than or equal to)0.2(per mille). 3 standard deviations gave an error 0.3(per mille) in the estimation of BAC from BrAC.
