Abstract

We report on the analysis of 15.092 DUI offenders between 1992 and 1995 in order to establish the rate of relapse. The ratio of relapse offenders and the whole group amounts to a total of 9.9 per cent. The relapse offenders were responsible for 21.1 per cent of all DUI offences. The study confirms an alcohol consumption in road traffic for the Mecklenburg region which lies much above the the national average. An increase in the number of repeated juvenile offenders can also be noted. In addition, it becomes apparent that as the frequency of offences increases the intervals between relapse offences decrease. This correlation exists regardless of the length of intervals between relapse offences which is determined by the investigation time span. Provided that there be proper definition of the time span involved, the measurement of the pace of relapse rates could present us with a convenient method for estimating the efficiency of drink driving controls.
